Piazza del Popolo , Piazza del Popolo, Roma RM, Italy

At the center of Piazza del Popolo, by the large fountain with the lions and the obelisk. The nearest metro stop is Flaminio (Line A). Our City Wonders coordinators will be wearing blue City Wonders polo shirts or jackets to be easily recognizable at the meeting point.

This activity will end right where it started.
Hop aboard your coach in central Rome, and travel south in air-conditioned comfort to Italy’s Campania region. As you travel, listen to tales about the colorful southern Italian area and Mt. Vesuvius.

After the volcano’s infamous AD 79 eruption, lava and volcanic ash destroyed the cities of Herculaneum and Pompeii. Evidence of those ancient streams of lava is still evident in the area.

First head from Rome to Pompeii. Once a thriving Roman city; today the town is best known for its UNESCO-listed archaeological digs, which are home to a wealth of relics. See incredibly preserved fossils and other ruins, plus plaster imprints of the town’s victims who were buried for years.

See the remains of the Forum and Teatro Grande, where some 5,000 people could once be seated. During your self-guided tour, learn about day-to-day life for the Pompeii locals as you wander streets where ancient shops, cafes and even brothels could be found.

Enjoy free time for sightseeing.

Then, journey to the infamous volcano. Step out of your coach for a steady-paced, walk to Mt Vesuvius’ summit, from where the most breathtaking views await. Make your way over trails covered in pumice rock and ash, before some free time to gaze down into the caldera and across the Bay of Naples.

Finally, head back to Rome by coach and finish with a drop-off at the start point.

Please note: Mt Vesuvius is inaccessible from mid-November to March. During this time, the hike is replaced with a visit to the iconic City of Naples. Take a panoramic bus tour and have some free time to walk around the city center.

City Wonders
Location
Stop At:
Pompeii Archaeological Park
The eruption in AD 79 spelled a fiery end for Pompeii, but the catastrophe also almost perfectly preserved the port city under layers of Volcanic ash. Thousands of years later, you can still explore the eerie streets and step inside homes, bathhouses and fast food places on your self-guided tour. You’ll travel from Rome to Pompeii in an air-conditioned private coach, accompanied and entertained all the way by your expert tour co-ordinator. Skip the line at Pompeii and head for a leisurely self-led tour around the city which paints a vivid picture of life in final days before the eruption. Throughout the ruins, you’ll come across harrowing death casts: plaster recreations of unfortunate citizens preserved by the superheated volcanic ash.
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes
Admission Ticket Included
Stop At:
Vesuvius National Park
It’s a short coach ride from Pompeii to the foot of the volcano that still looms above it. A half-mile hike from the parking lot takes you right to the sometimes still-steaming crater of Mt. Vesuvius – still perhaps the most dangerous volcano in the world. Stand at the epicentre of that ancient disaster and feel awe at the utter devastation it must have caused, to blast an entire city off the map for millennia. Then turn and enjoy the contrast: the crater offers the most stunning view of the sun-drenched Bay of Naples. In the winter months, when Vesuvius is closed for hiking, the tour travels from Pompeii to Naples, with panoramic views of the volcano and historical commentary from your tour co-ordinator along the way. You’ll have ample free time to explore Naples – a city as vibrant and alive as Pompeii is quiet and affecting – before the comfortable coach returns you to Rome.
Duration: 2 hours
Admission Ticket Included
  • Confirmation will be received at time of booking
  • IMPORTANT INFORMATION REQUIRED FROM ALL PASSENGERS: You MUST provide all passenger names at the time of booking in order to visit Mount Vesuvius or you may be refused entry.
  • During summer months in rare cases of inclement weather or strikes, the crater of Vesuvius may be closed to visitors. In this case, an alternative visit to the city of Naples will be included.
  • Not wheelchair accessible
  • Near public transportation
  • Not recommended for travelers with back problems
  • No heart problems or other serious medical conditions
  • From late November to March the Vesuvius isn't accessible and it is replaced with a visit to the city of Naples with panoramic bus tour and free time.
  • Option to upgrade to Pompeii, Amalfi Coast and Positano Small-Group Day Trip from Rome with private coach (Mt Vesuvius or Naples not included)
  • *Upgrade Option ONLY: From November 1st until end of March, instead of Positano we will visit the town of Amalfi, as in Positano during the winter months most shops and restaurant are closed.
  • *Upgrade Option ONLY: Due to peak summer weekend traffic enroute and on the Amalfi Coast itself, between June 1st and September 11th, we may substitute Sorrento instead of Positano to avoid serious delays and provide you with a better experience.
  • The hike up to the crater of Vesuvius requires a good level of general fitness. The walk is uphill at a 14 degree angle and takes roughly 20 minutes.
  • Travelers should have a strong physical fitness level
  • This tour/activity will have a maximum of 24 travelers

Fun day trip to learn about Pompeiians
Henrietta_V
, Jun 2022
Anna was a knowledgeable tour guide. She narrated historical events of attractions along our bus ride. After Pompeii, she even had the foresight to reserve tables for us at trattoria nearby. Mauricio was a good driver. Our journey was smooth. He even halted the bus to save a dog which ran in the middle of the street. Overall the trip was worth the price. We did not have to wait in line long to enter the attractions.

Must see Pompeii and Positano, Tour company needs better customer service though!

We truly enjoyed the experience and we are glad we spent 13 hours doing this tour. it was exhausting but worth it. The tour guides were great but one customer service rep was awful to us. We had arrived to tour on time and they had 7 tours meeting in one location . We heard the employee say “Pompeii over there” and got out of line and stood with Pompeii guests. The tour employees had a clipboard that said “Vatican” so naturally we thought we were in wrong line. Needless to say, we were standing with wrong Pompeii tour, our bad for misunderstanding but when we called customer service, the lady who answered was rude and obnoxious, spoke over me and accused me of not being at the location on time. We explained the situation, she still moved our tour to next day, but she was horrible. Bad reflection of company!

Pompeii and Vesuvius history and nature!

The tour of Pompeii was excellent! Our guide was very knowledgeable and fun! It is a long time in the bus, but it’s air conditioned and your guide will give you interesting bits along the way (plus it’s great to nap). There are also stops for coffee there and back. Climbing Mount Vesuvius was strenuous, but well worth it.

Disappointing

Very disappointing. The trip is 12 hours long, but you are only 1,5 hour in Pompeii, skipping most of the important places. The Positano village is parade of bad taste with nothing authentic to see. It's just an expensive, kitschy tourist trap. The guide Mariella was babbling in unrelated sentences....

Absolutely Not.

Run, don't walk, away from this tour. From a Covid standpoint, we were 9 people on a 10 person bus for 6 hours. The tour guide Jocelyn never wore her mask properly. This is unsafe. From a human standpoint, our guide was racist and asked Asian participants questions about Japanese historic figures. They were not Japanese. She also lectured about how she was instructed to say "Happy Holidays" but preferred "Merry Christmas". From a general tour perspective, be sure to read the fine print. You are 100% on your own in Pompeii, and the tour guide will give no information about the site on the 3 hour drive down. Your "free time" in Naples will be policed, they will only let you do what they want you to. After arriving early to the meeting spot in Naples, we received a call saying we were being left. Our guide had given us the wrong location. She repeatedly berated us for "being late" when we found her. What an absolute joke. It's more pleasant to take the train, hire a Pompeii guide, and enjoy Naples (and less expensive). You also save yourself the headache and displeasure of meeting "tour guide" Jocelyn.

We had such a wonderful time on this trip. The tour guide for Pompeii was knowledgeable and interactive but the real winner was our guide on the bus. Kler was personable, friendly, welcoming, and a joy to talk to. Shared personal stories and just really connected with us.

The walk to Vesuvius, though a little strenuous, was so worth it and our guide, Clare was very patient with my five year old nephew.

Luca and Enzio were great tour guides probably the best we've had. Very funny, friendly and knowledgeable about Pompeii and Italy in general. The tour is great, would highly recommend but would recommend some good walking shoes if climbing mount Vesuvius. The views from Vesuvius are incredible and Pompeii is beautiful.

We loved everything about this tour. Our tour guide Sonya was so friendly. We felt like friends by the end if the day. Carlo our driver was also very nice. We enjoyed talking with him. Natasha our guide in Pompeii was passionate about Pompeii and made us feel the same by the end of the tour. We also very much enjoyed our visit to Mount Vesuvius. We met really nice people from all over on this tour. We definitely recommend this tour.

Misleading
Sheldon_K
, Jun 2022
Before I get into this review, note that it was a national holiday in Italy which made the traffic horrendous. We didn’t get to go to Positano and only had about 15-30 minutes to walk around Sorrento. The entire day felt rushed except Pompeii. The tour guides weren’t very enthusiastic anywhere we went. Overall, the experience was not the best. I promise it would be better to spend a little more money and book a better tour.

Not quite up to Viator standards.
Jeffery_S
, Jun 2022
There trip was worth taking and we enjoyed it because Pompei is spectacular but it was a touch below the quality of other Viator tours we have taken. We had already studied the history and geography but it would have been good during the long bus ride to have had an introduction to the area and the sequence of events of the 3 days of disaster. For example, no mention was made of Pliny the Elder and his attempted rescue of the trapped families or of the account by Pliny the Younger. An extra 30-60 minutes at the site would have been good too. We got only about 10 minutes in the Museum. The guides were nice and had good energy but more substance and a little more time would have made this an excellent rather than average tour.

Excellent day trip

We did the Pompeii with Mount Vesuvius option and it was an excellent experience. It was such an interesting and surreal trip. Be prepared for a long day, but it is worth every minute. The tour guide Emiliano was very knowledgeable and funny and his enthusiasm never faltered during this very long trip! He had great advice for places to see and where to eat to avoid “tourist traps”. Would highly recommend this tour.

Fantastic tour with Emiliano and Natasha (City wonders)
Poh_L
, Jun 2022
Emiliano our guide was both knowledgeable and funny. His sense of humour made the trip much more enjoyable; regaling us with personal adventures interspersed with history of Pompeii, Rome, Naples, local cuisine… always respectful and created camaraderie within a diverse group of 25 in a short time. Natasha our guide at the ruins was professional, engaging and surprised our family when she woke Mandarin with a Chinese North-eastern accent! The 12 hour trip was amazing, climbing Mt versuvius and walking through the ruins from thousands of years ago. On our way back, Emiliano shared his list of restaurants to hunt down based on “Emiliano’s laminated sheet of restaurants.” It has its own QR code- remember to ask for it. Huge thanks to Emiliano and Natasha- we strongly recommend touring with them. It was delightful and memorable.
